The Best Fitness Articles of the Week #65 – Paleo Coffee, Preventing Berries from Molding and a Deadlift Training Secret

Here’s a recap of the best health and fitness articles I’ve read over the past week.

In Search of the Ultimate Paleo Coffee

Yup, this looks like a great cup of coffee! I’ve been using MCT (medium-chain triglycerides) oil for my coffee, which contains both coconut and palm oil, but as soon as it’s gone, I’ll be switching to coconut oil only (the palm oil industry is destructive to the environment and animals).

The Beginning Cyclist’s Guide to the Rules of the Road (and All Those Funny Hand Signals)

There are some great tips here that I know for a fact many new cyclists don’t know yet, for example yelling out “on your left” when passing someone on the trail. That’s a great tip to know when you’re starting out or you could risk running into somebody if they unknowingly move into your path. I even learned a few things from this article, such as pointing to hazards if you see them. I can’t believe I’ve never done that! I feel rude for not doing it the few times I’ve seen glass or a snake on the trail.

Layered Raw Taco Salad for Two

Ooh! This looks delicious. If you’ve never tried walnut “meat” before, you should give it a shot. It’s surprisingly a lot like meat. There’s also a nice simple guacamole recipe included, as well as a macadamia nut cream sauce. I’ve never tried a nut cream sauce before, so I’m really excited to make this recipe.

Paleo Dessert Recipes Vol.4

A whole list of delicious looking paleo desserts. Some call for eggs, but I can easily replace that with flax or chia seeds. I think most of these can be made vegan. I’m particularly interested in this recipe for Coconut Kanten w/Berry Compote. I’ve just recently discovered agar agar (kanten) when I wanted to make my own vegan cheese. A little tip – agar agar is really expensive at health food stores, so look for it at asian grocers instead. You can get it really cheap there.

Low Carb Side Dishes

I’ve never done a low-carb diet, but if I ever do, there are some great recipes here to try. I’ve heard of cauliflower rice and mashed cauliflower before, but I’ve never tried them. I’ve made jicama rice before, and that’s delicious! I’m gonna pick up some cauliflower soon to try out the mashed potatoes alternative.

Male doctors make $12k more per year than female doctors

I think this is really sad and disgusting. How can this still be happening? It sounds like something from the 1920’s. Women typically make $12,000 per year LESS than their male counterparts. Wow. I actually prefer female doctors/physicians. They’re just as smart, and just as well trained as male doctors, but they seem to be generally nicer. At least in my experience.

Cosmetic Surgery–Proceed with Caution

Having worked on probably hundreds of cosmetic surgeon websites in the last 7 years that I’ve been doing internet marketing, I’m very familiar with the message that cosmetic surgery can be great for people because it can help them feel better about themselves, but after reading this article, I wonder if I’ve simply been brainwashed by marketing propaganda. I’m sure cosmetic procedures really do help lots of people, but now I’m left wondering how many people are left with psychological damage.

How To Keep Berries From Molding

This article couldn’t have come at a better time. It’s the season for berries, and I’ve been buying lots of them. I was just recently wondering if there were any tricks to keep my berries from molding so quickly, because it seems like they go bad within just a few days. And guess what the trick is? Vinegar! Ahh, is there anything vinegar can’t do?

Rowing Machine Workout – The Complete Guide

It’s weird when I think about it, but I’ve never used a rowing machine. I saw it all the time in the gym, sitting there all by its lonesome, but I never had the desire to use it. I know some people love it though, such as my fiance. I don’t have a gym membership anymore because I workout in my basement, but if you’re interested in learning more about the rowing machine, this article has it all.

Scott Jurek: Ultramarathon Running: How A Vegan Diet Helped Me Run 100 Miles

There’s lots of proof out there showing that any athlete can be just as successful and competitive on a vegan diet as someone who eats meat. It’s awesome to see that Scott Jurek has discovered how great it is to be vegan.

Don’t feel like exercise? Scientists find compound that may help you work out harder

Motivation in a pill? I think one of the biggest reasons people don’t workout, or fail to maintain a regular workout schedule, is because they can’t stay motivated. This sounds like it might be the answer. It’s only been tested in mice so far, but it sounds promising.

Three Running Workouts to Improve Strength and Stamina

I suck! I don’t do any of these running workouts. I want to try to include all three of these running workouts into my routine. I wish I could find a nice hill near my home to run. I’m surrounded by flatness! I do know a track that usually empty though and I have a simple interval timer on my phone that I can use to do interval workouts.

Is There Such a Thing As “Knee Friendly” Squats?

I have constant knee problems, meaning my knees pretty much hurt at all times of the day, so I guess that means that I have less than optimal tissue quality and I need to start foam rolling every single day. I think I probably need to work on my technique too. I wish I had someone like Tony Gentilcore to train me in person 😉

The Shocking (But Real) Reason For Your Lack of Progress

The reason given in this article for why people don’t see progress is spot on. Everyone gets so much differing advice, from their friends, from personal trainers and from the internet, that they never stick to a solid routine long enough to see if really works. I used to jump around with routines like that too, but then I got serious and then I saw results. I still like to make minor modifications, but the core of my routine has been exactly the same for over a year now, and I love it.

Upgrade Your Energy Supply: Optimize Your Supplements The Bulletproof Executive

Awesome post from The Bulletproof Executive! Learn why you’re wasting money on expensive multivitamins and why you should supplement with specific vitamins instead. The article also explains what each specific supplement does, how much to take and the brand that Dave, the writer, prefers.

Raw Granola Berry Bar (Kid Friendly) – YouTube

I should probably just buy her book because all of her recipes are great. All you need to do is lightly pulse in your food processer: 1 cup of mulberries, 1 cup freeze dried strawberries, 8 pitted medjool dates, and 2 teaspoons of raw carob powder. Form into bars and that’s it. Easy!

The Deadlift Training Secret No One Talks About

I’m nowhere near this point of stalling in my deadlift yet, but when I finally get there, you can bet that I’m going to try this trick out. Great phone conversation here too 😀
